Adult Judo

  • A: Adult classes at NJC cover a full range of techniques including Tachiwaza (throws), Newaza (groundwork), pins, transitions, strangles, arm locks, and escapes. You'll also explore combinations and counters as you progress.

  • A: No. We start by teaching you Ukemi (breakfalls) — how to fall safely. Only when you’re confident and comfortable will we introduce you to controlled throwing drills.

  • A: Yes. You train at your own pace, and classes are structured to accommodate all levels. Many of our adult members join to improve fitness, mobility, and confidence — and they see great progress quickly.

  • A: Judo places a strong emphasis on balance, posture, and timing. It combines dynamic standing throws with highly effective groundwork. Compared to BJJ, Judo has more emphasis on stand-up technique, but complements BJJ very well.

  • A: Yes — but only once you're ready. Submissions in Judo include strangles and armlocks and are taught with control and respect for your partner’s safety. Beginners will first focus on throws, positioning, and pins.

  • A: 100%. Many of our adult students train for fitness, self-defence, or the love of learning — not everyone competes. That said, if you do want to test your skills in competition, we’ll support you every step of the way.

  • A: A class usually includes a warm-up, breakfall training, technical instruction (either standing or ground), followed by drilling and optional Randori (sparring). We always finish with a cool-down and stretch.

  • A: Absolutely. We have a strong and welcoming Masters community at NJC. Many of our senior Judoka return to the sport in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond — some even win medals at national and international events!

CHILD'S Judo

  • A: Judo is made up of two core areas — Tachiwaza (standing techniques) and Newaza (groundwork). Your child will learn a mix of throws, pins, transitions, and submissions suited to their age and experience.

  • A: Absolutely. All techniques are taught in a progressive, age-appropriate way. Safety is our top priority. We use crash mats, controlled instruction, and constant supervision to ensure every child trains safely.

  • A: No. We start with breakfall training (Ukemi) to teach them how to fall safely before any throwing is introduced. Confidence and control come first.

  • A: A throw involves taking an opponent off their feet using technique and balance. A pin (Osaekomi) means holding them down on the mat to score and control the fight. Both are key parts of Judo.

  • A: Definitely! Judo helps improve balance, coordination, and body awareness over time. We work with each child at their own pace to develop these skills.

  • A: For younger children, we focus mostly on throws and pins. Submissions (like arm locks or strangles) are introduced only at appropriate ages and under strict safety guidance, following British Judo rules.

  • A: Yes, many Judo techniques help kids learn how to stay calm, maintain control, and use leverage rather than strength. This builds confidence and awareness in everyday life too.
