Our Core Values
Our Values
At Northampton Judo Club, our culture is shaped by the Judo Moral Code, guiding not only how we train but also how we treat each other, on and off the mat.
We use these values to inform our decisions, build positive relationships, and create a respectful, inclusive community for all Judoka.
Courtesy
Be kind, polite, and generous, without expecting anything in return.
Courage
Face challenges bravely. Every Judoka has their own battles, and courage looks different for each of us.
Honesty
Act truthfully and with integrity. Do what is morally right, even when no one is watching.
Honour
Stand by your principles. Be someone who acts nobly and correctly, with pride in doing what’s right.
Modesty
Train and live without arrogance. Let your actions speak for themselves.
Respect
Appreciate others and show self-respect. Treat everyone, from beginners to black belts, with dignity.
Self-Control
Manage your emotions, especially in moments of frustration, conflict, or difficulty.
Friendship
Be a good companion on and off the tatami. Strong friendships strengthen the whole Judo community.
What Is the Judo Moral Code?
The Judo Moral Code is a set of core values created by Judo’s founder, Jigoro Kano, to guide Judoka in life as well as in training. These values are the foundation of our sport and the behaviours we encourage on and off the tatami.
The eight values are:
Courtesy
Courage
Honesty
Honour
Modesty
Respect
Self-Control
Friendship
Together, they form a code of conduct that promotes personal development, character, and community. To explore this further, we recommend the book: “Jigoro Kano and the Moral Code.”
Our Vision
A united Judo community, renowned for excellence and recognised for podium success.
Our Mission
To maximise the contribution of Judo to British society by ensuring easy access to safe, inclusive, and inspiring clubs—all grounded in the values of Judo.
