For those unfamiliar:

Tachi-waza in judo focuses on techniques like throws, sweeps, and takedowns performed from a standing position.

Ne-waza encompasses grappling techniques like pins, joint locks (kansetsu-waza), and chokes (shime-waza) that are applied while both practitioners are on the ground.

While judo emphasizes tachi-waza, newaza is also a crucial part of the art, offering a complete skill set for judo practitioners.

Don’t Keep Making the Same Mistakes! We Can Help You Progress!

Are you stuck doing randori (free practice) the same way every session?

Do you rely on just one go-to move? Or find yourself trapped in the same position or scenario every time?

Ever wondered if it could be different?

You’re definitely not alone — this happens all the time. But there’s a better way, one that will accelerate your progress and make your training more effective.

Want to know the secret?

It’s all about mindset and focus.

Most people see randori as just “part of training” — the free practice portion where you wrestle for a few minutes, sometimes standing, sometimes on the ground. But just like there are many types of uchi-komi (repetition drills)—static, moving, speed, off-side, one-for-one—you need to think about randori in the same way.

Randori is a powerful tool for growth when approached with clear objectives and variety.

Master Your Randori!
6 Keys to Smarter, More Effective Practice sessions to boost your development:

Tip 1: Focus on One Objective

“Pick a single technique or strategy per session and attack it relentlessly. Watch how your opponent reacts to build your own judo tree of counters and combos.”

  • Choose ONE technique or strategy to focus on each session.

  • Attack relentlessly with that move and study opponent reactions.

  • Build your judo tree by developing counters and combos.

Tip 2: Adapt to Different Styles

“Every opponent fights differently. Spot if they’re aggressive, defensive, or specialists and adjust your pace, grips, and techniques accordingly.”

  • Recognise your opponent’s style: aggressive, defensive, or specialist throws.

  • Adapt your approach: speed up, control grips, or change technique selection.

  • Training against all styles makes you a versatile Judoka.

Tip 3: Scenario Training Builds Mental Strength

“Practice being ahead or behind in score, and use mat space smartly to simulate competition pressure. Learning these situations makes you calm and confident.”

  • Practice match situations: winning, losing, chasing points.

  • Use the mat space strategically to simulate real competition pressure.

  • Learn to stay calm and smart under match conditions.

Tip 4: Grip Fighting Is Key

“Spend rounds focused purely on grips — controlling sleeves and collars, breaking grips, and building strength. Grip mastery controls the fight!

  • Dedicate randori to grip fighting without throwing.

  • Focus on sleeve control, cross grips, and grip breaks.

  • Grip control is fundamental to dominating randori and competition.

Tip 5: Vary Your Time & Tempo

“Mix up your randori rounds between fast, high-intensity bursts and longer, steady endurance work. Train for speed, power, and stamina.”

  • Mix short, intense randori rounds (1 min) with longer endurance rounds (5–10 min).

  • Adjust pace to match different competition styles and improve fitness.

  • Train to attack multiple times in short bursts for explosiveness.

Tip 6: Control Space & Distance

“Work with partners to practice closing distance for attack or keeping space to defend. Good positioning sets up better throws and defenses.”

  • Practice closing distance to attack and creating space to defend.

  • Use partner drills with assigned roles to develop spatial awareness.

  • Control positioning and angles for more effective technique setups.

In Conclusion

Randori is essential for progress, but repeating the same patterns can lead to plateaus and frustration.

Focus on these six areas to train smarter, improve faster, and—most importantly—enjoy the process.

Don’t get stuck. Mix it up. Experiment. Let us know how it goes!
