OUR STUDENTS
Being part of The Nick Brooks Association means our students are not simply joining a local training club. They are becoming part of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lineage, coaching network and community built around the continued development of the art.Our aim is to pass knowledge forward, develop technically capable practitioners and create an environment where every student can progress — from their very first class through to advanced training and competition.
HEAD COACH – ALAN MINEARDS
BJJ Black Belt • Judo 2nd Dan • Former British Judo Champion
Alan Mineards is the Head Coach of ORIGIN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU, bringing decades of experience in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the development of a complete, modern grappling programme.A 2nd Dan Judo Black Belt, former British Judo Champion, and BJJ Black Belt, Alan began his martial arts journey at Northampton Judo Club under the highly respected Sensei Clive Douglas. His Judo background has given him an exceptional understanding of balance, movement, timing, throwing mechanics, gripping, positional control and pressure — skills that have become fundamental to his approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.Driven to expand his skills further, Alan began cross-training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, developing a fluid submission-focused style that naturally complemented his Judo. After years of training, competition and coaching, Alan achieved his BJJ Black Belt under Peter Olsson and Ed Ingamells, continuing his development within a respected UK lineage. At ORIGIN, Alan brings these disciplines together to create a highly effective and adaptable grappling system. His coaching combines:Judo-based takedowns and stand-up controlBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu positional systemsSubmission grapplingPressure-based controlTechnical movement and transitionsPractical, intelligent grapplingAlan's coaching philosophy is simple:
Train smart. Train hard. Develop constantly.
Every class is built around developing technically capable grapplers who understand not only what to do, but why they are doing it.Whether working with complete beginners, experienced practitioners or competitive athletes, Alan places a strong emphasis on high-quality technique, disciplined fundamentals, controlled pressure, resilience, respect and continual improvement. His goal is to create an environment where every student can develop their own game, build confidence and become a better grappler — both physically and mentally. As a coach, mentor and lifelong martial artist, Alan is dedicated to raising the standard of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling in the region while helping develop the next generation of practitioners.
BJJ COACH – RICKI SHORTLAND
BJJ Black Belt • 10th Planet Brown Belt • No-Gi Specialist
Ricki Shortland is a key No-Gi coach at ORIGIN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU, bringing a highly technical, modern and dynamic approach to No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.A BJJ Black Belt and 10th Planet Brown Belt, Ricki has developed an exceptional understanding of No-Gi grappling, movement, transitions, positional control and submission systems. His style is fluid, creative and highly technical.Rather than relying on strength or athleticism, Ricki teaches students to use angles, timing, frames, leverage, movement and pressure to create opportunities and systematically break down their opponents.No-Gi grappling is constantly evolving, with positions changing rapidly and traditional grips replaced by underhooks, wrist control, body locks, head control and sophisticated positional systems.Ricki thrives within this environment. His coaching explores the connections between:Takedowns and entriesWrestling and positional controlGuard passingLeg entanglementsBack attacksFront headlock systemsSubmission chainsScrambles and transitionsModern No-Gi attacking systemsWhat sets Ricki apart as a coach is his ability to identify the details within movement. He doesn't simply teach isolated techniques. He teaches students to understand the connections between positions — how one attack creates another, how movement creates openings, how opponents react to pressure and how those reactions can be used to build the next attack.
Don't chase the submission. Create the reaction.
Ricki's coaching encourages students to become proactive grapplers who are constantly creating problems for their opponents. His sessions develop the ability to read movement, recognise opportunities, chain attacks and stay one step ahead.Whether you're completely new to No-Gi, developing your existing game or preparing for competition, Ricki provides an environment where students can learn, experiment, problem-solve and develop a modern submission grappling skillset. His passion for No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is reflected in every session, making him a hugely important part of the coaching team at ORIGIN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU.
BJJ COACH – STEVE FREEZER
Judo Black Belt • BJJ Brown Belt • British Masters National BJJ Champion • British Masters Judo Bronze Medallist
Steve Freezer brings together extensive experience in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and competitive grappling to the coaching team at ORIGIN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU.A Judo Black Belt and BJJ Brown Belt, Steve has successfully competed across both disciplines, including becoming a British Masters National BJJ Champion and a British Masters Judo Bronze Medallist. His competitive experience has helped shape a coaching approach built around technical efficiency, pressure, positional awareness and the ability to apply technique against genuine resistance.Steve specialises in connecting the different phases of grappling:Takedown → Transition → Control → SubmissionHis coaching combines:Judo-based takedowns and grippingBJJ positional fundamentalsGi and lapel controlTransition and takedown systemsTop pressure and positional controlSubmission attacksTechnical problem-solvingA particular feature of Steve's game is his understanding of lapel-based attacks and control systems. The Gi is not simply a uniform — it becomes another tool for controlling movement, restricting an opponent, creating angles and developing submission opportunities.Steve's approach is centred around developing efficient grappling rather than relying on physical strength.
Technique before force.
Students are encouraged to develop the ability to control and submit through timing, leverage, positioning, pressure and intelligent movement. His experience across both Judo and BJJ gives students a unique perspective on how the two disciplines can complement each other — particularly when transitioning from standing exchanges into ground fighting.Steve also understands the importance of pressure-testing techniques.A technique isn't truly understood until it can be applied against an opponent who is actively trying to stop you.His coaching therefore focuses on taking techniques beyond the demonstration and developing the ability to recognise situations, make decisions and execute under pressure. As both a competitor and coach, Steve is committed to helping students build strong foundations, develop confidence and create a Jiu-Jitsu game that continues to evolve throughout their journey. From takedown to transition.
From control to submission. That is the approach Steve brings to ORIGIN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU.
THE ORIGIN APPROACH
At ORIGIN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU, we believe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than a collection of techniques. It's about learning how to solve problems under pressure.Students are taught to hunt for position, create opportunities, control their opponent and ultimately secure the submission through skill, timing, pressure and intelligence — not simply strength. Our coaching team brings together different experiences and styles while remaining grounded in the technical foundations and lineage of The Nick Brooks Association. From Judo-based takedowns and positional control to modern BJJ and No-Gi submission systems, our aim is to develop well-rounded grapplers who can adapt to different situations and opponents. We don't believe in simply collecting techniques. We want students to understand position, movement, pressure, timing and decision-making.Because the goal isn't just to know more Jiu-Jitsu.
The goal is to become better at Jiu-Jitsu.
OUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
POSITION BEFORE SUBMISSION
Control creates opportunity.
TECHNIQUE BEFORE FORCE
Efficiency beats unnecessary strength.
INTELLIGENCE BEFORE CHAOS
Understand the problem before trying to solve it.
PRESSURE CREATES REACTION
Make your opponent respond — then exploit the response.
CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT
Every round is an opportunity to learn something.
TRAIN WITH PURPOSE
